Technology Helping People is active with organizations that represent the interests of those with disabilities in order to understand the needs and challenges they face. People with disabilities are a very vibrant and important part of our community.
On November 6, 2025, the leadership of Technology Helping People joined the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) in Washington DC to celebrate 30 years of advocacy and support of disabled people. We were able to meet and talk with the winners of the AAPD Paul G. Hearne Emerging Leader Awards and were inspired by their dedication and work.
In addition to building connections with many of the supporters and partners of the AAPD, we enjoyed hearing the wonderful speakers share the history and current challenges for disabled rights and representation. Maria Town, President and CEO of AAPD gave a wonderful presentation of the currently achievements and opportunities for the AAPD.
Senator Tammy Duckworth gave a wonderful speech on how we all are only an accident away from being disabled. She reminded us that most people who age will develop one or several disabilities. And that we should all be happy to live long enough to be able to develop a disability.
John Kemp co-founder of the AAPD shared the history and challenges that gave rise to the founding of the AAPD. He honored the memory of those who contributed so much to the growth of the organization.
Finally, we were entertained by the performance of Warren “Wawa” Snipe who is an acclaimed Hip Hop Recording Artist who performed an American Sign Language Hip Hop performance with music and lights that was both uplifting and entertaining.
